Aging...

Wanted to draw something different, hence I pick a picture of an old lady from a Chinese book that teaches pencil drawing. Felt very depress especially when it came to drawing the wrinkles. Somehow this drawing made me realize what kind of damages aging can do to a person (evidently on the face, especially.)

Photobucket

Few days after drawing this old lady, I pick on someone who is very much younger and vibrant to draw. All Elaine said when she see the drawing was: "Very weird..."

More figures...

The first few were homework given by the instructor. Actually he didn't say to do the shading, cos he just want us to practice on the proportion, but I really can't resist not shading it. Anyhow, I shaded it using a tortillion.

Drawn this after having done my homework... sigh... proportion wrong...

You think you are a Saint?

Suddenly thought of this a while ago...
If you are seldom angered by what people say, that doesn't necessary mean that you have a good temperament or that you are good in anger management, or whatever s_hit you think you have attained. It is probably because people around you choose their words correctly before saying it to you so that you would not be hurt or angered. That, is then a kind of supreme attainment!

Being courteous, polite and nice toward people is not just for show. We should behave in a right manner towards others if we respect them. However, for my case, I would always be polite to people but would turn very hostile if I don't get the same kind of treatment in return!

Taking notes

I have recently seen the movie "Doubt", and in the show, there is this one priest who has the habit of noting down his bit and pieces of thoughts whenever his has one so that he could talk about it during his sermons. Well, though this is one of a moives I did enjoy watching, I am not talking about it here. It is just that I kind of like the idea of writing thoughts down.
Very often, I would have opinions and views on issues and matters and at that very moment, I would start to come up with my own explanation on why the thing is happening, and sometime would even come up with some philosophies which amaze myself:) But unfortunately, I have got poor memory. I just couldn't keep them in my brain and retrieve them out when I want to put it in writing later on:(
Hence, perhaps I shall start to cultivate the habit of jotting my own thoughts. Hmm... shall give it a try;P

人言可畏

Heard from a friend (let's just call him Richard) that another friend (let's call him Andy) had clashed with (Oscar) yesterday. All three are close friends but at times, one does speak about another behind one's back among the trio. Apparently Andy had told Oscar things about Richard which Andy wasn't quite happy about but still able to tolerate. Oscar on the other hand told Richard the things that he were told. Richard then talked to Andy and said that he was told of things Andy had said to Oscar, in a not very friendly manner of course. And so, the volcano erupted.

Andy and I had some differences in opinion over some work issues not so long ago and while I was not around, Andy had discussed the whole matter with Oscar and told him some of the negative views he had on me. (This whole episode happened before the one mentioned earlier.) And then, Oscar came telling me about it. I would have blown my top off if I had not had a previous encounter and the sudden enlightenment. Anyway, my reply to Oscar was: "It is normal for Andy to have told you these, cos he is not happy about the issue. If I were as unhappy as he was, I would have done the same too."

The next encounter I had happened years ago. During that time, I was very much into photography and had spent about $4k to $5k on my camera and its accersorries. And so, my office people had asked that I bring my camera and take a few shots of group photo for the whole office. And so I did. However, after the session one guy came telling me that another guy (let's call him Ben) had criticised about my camera and skill. I was mad. My blood boiled immediately and was about to start cursing and swearing. However, just at that moment, a question suddenly came to me. I think a Buddha must have just passed by and touched my head. I asked myself: "Why did Ben suddenly behaved like that? It seems that Ben is unhappy over certain issue about me." Then I start to analyse... And my conclusion is; this guy who came to me and told me about the critiques Ben gave was the same guy I had shared my critiques towards Ben not that long ago. And this guy must have squealed on me and that was what pissed off Ben.

So lesson learnt here; Always try to analyse what people tell you first, especially about things between friends, colleagues or even your family. Why are they telling you this? And the most important thing is not to react immediately, especially on impulse.

Next, when you want to tell someone of what other said, especially things that concerned the person you are talking to; do a filtering process. Omit those which you think will cause damage and only say the necessary things. Pertaining this, I had another encounter, which took place way before all those that were mentioned earlear. Andy called me one day and told me that my supervisor was unhappy about something I had done and the supervisor said: "I am going to f.u.c.k him up!" I immediately hung up the phone and rushed to my supervisor office and confronted him. The first question I asked was: "I heard you want to f.u.c.k me is it!?" Had my supervisor not stepped back a little, I am sure we would have ended up in a brawl. So, if the consequence was what Andy wanted, he had succeeded. But I am sure that wasn't his intention, he just didn't realise the importance of filtering!

Figure drawing

I have signed up for the figure drawing class with NAFA and has attended 3 lessons already:) Really find drawing very very fun!!!

First human figure I have ever drawn which think is not so bad for a first timer:)

Photobucket

Haven't learnt how to draw the hands yet, that's why I didn't draw the fingers...
Photobucket

Male portraits

Actually these male portraits are some popular celebs, but don't think anyone can tell who they are from my drawings:(

Sigh...the eyes very very weird...

Picking up speed

I was taking too long to draw a portrait, I realised. Thus, I tried to pick up some speed and drew on rough papers.

Drawing someone I know:)

Hee... drew this. Not very well done, but at least this is the first time I am drawing someone of younger age:)

Photobucket

Another drawing of someone I know:)

Photobucket

Bunny:)

Bought a book by Lee Hammond on how to draw pets:)
In this book, the author used tortillions to do the shading, hence I also bought 2 packets of tortillions from Art Friends and drew a bunny with it (Tried to followed what the author did with the bunny, but mine is nothing closed to her's...)

Photobucket

The author has got a pet dog named Misty, and she has drawn Misty beautifully. I tried to draw from the author's drawing. And upon completing, I decided that the dog I drew is not Misty. And I named it Hazy:)

From a Music CD box...

I played songs when I draw in my room, and glad that I have got quite a number of music CDs. Recently I have been patronizing a stall at Bugis. The music CDs are cheap, about 10 to 12 dollars only and some are even new albums. So, there was once I went there and I bought a Sarah Brown's album and when I open the box, I was delighted to find that it comes with a few post card sized photos of the singer. Thus I picked one to draw...

More celebs

And for the first time, I am drawing someone with a different expression.

Resident evil's main actress (don't know her name):

Photobucket

Drawing celebrity

Though I am rather happy about my progress so far, but still... the drawings I'd drawn mostly don't have the resemblance of the person being drawn... But I am sure, with much much more practices, there will come a day I will succeed!

I finally drew a celebrity... Nicole Kidman...

Photobucket

Portrait with props

Somehow, I think it is much easier to just draw half the face:)

Photobucket

Drawing teeth

When I noticed that I have not been drawing anyone that exposed their teeth, I decided to try one:) And I quite like how the teeth turn out to be.

Photobucket

2nd attempt on "Alien"

Tried drawing the model which I had drawn before, which the eyes were terribly off, from the same photo.

Photobucket

During the lessons, while drawing from photos, I have always been drawing from photos of A4 size. Mostly provided by the instructor. Thus, when out from the class, I only looked for big pictures from magazines and have the impression that it is impossible to draw a portrait by looking at a 4R photo. But after awhile, I decided to give it a try and surprisingly, it can work too!

Anyway, this is a drawing of a pic from a First magazine. I am not going to lie to myself... there are just too many flaws in my drawing:(

On my own

8 lessons of the course seems very short. I even hope that the instructor would have an advance course for this portrait drawing. Anyway, I have been drawing quite a little since then and bought some books for reference.

Drawn this on a rough piece of paper with 2B pencil. Not much of shading done.

Pi Xiu

Tried drawing something different...

Drawing live models

It was in the last 2 lessons that the instructor had got 2 students from the school to pose for the class for portrait drawing. As there were about 10 of us in the class, each of us only paid $4 to each model.

My first live model drawing...

Second live model...

Practises

Whatever I am writing now (including the previous 2 entries) are all back dated:)

I borrowed a book on portrait drawing from the library and imitated the drawings of some noses and ears from it for practices.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Looks like alien...

Ever since I signed up the Portrait drawing course, I have been drawing one or two pieces every week.

Drawn this during one of the class. Sigh... don't know why the eyes are not balance... looks so alien:(

Photobucket

Well, for the first few lessons, all drawings were based on photos, and out of the 8 lessons, 2 were drawing sculptures and 2 for live models.

This is one of the sculptures (learning the muscles in the face):

Picked up New Hobby

Have signed up a course "Basic Portrait drawing" with NAFA. It's a 8 lessons course and commenced on 13/5/09.
Till now, though I have completed the course, I couldn't draw very well yet. Anyway, I still find joy in drawing and I am sure with more practices, I will definitely see improvement:)

Kind of fall in love with NAFA:) Hence, I signed up another course "Figure drawing". Commenced on 20/7/09. 8 lessons too.

Both courses cost $299.60 each, quite heart pain but since I enjoyed the course so much, I think it's worth the money:)

Drawn this in my second lesson of Portrait drawing class:)
Photobucket

Subsequent lesson, I was taught to draw using grids.
